Vololights, Lampu Rem Ini Menyala Meski Tuas Rem Tak Ditarik

GILAMOTOR.com – Lampu rem bekerja saat pengendara menarik atau menginjak tuas rem. Tapi lampu rem itu hanya memberikan satu tanda, tak peduli motor itu melakukan pengereman perlahan atau mendadak, tampilan nyalanya sama saja. Ya, seperti itu.

Bagaimana kalau pengendara melakukan perlambatan hanya dengan melepas tuas gas atau dengan downshifting alias engine brake? Jelas lampu rem tidak akan menyala. Pengalaman itu yang membuat seorang desainer bernama Fausin Mdisa nyaris tertabrak mobil dari belakang saat berkendara di jalan bebas hambatan di San Diego.

Saat Fausin akan keluar jalur bebas hambatan, dia melakukan perlambatan motornya hanya dengan melepas gas dan menurunkan posisi gir atau engine brake. Perlambatan model ini jelas tak berpengaruh pada lampu rem belakang yang bekerja hanya jika tuas rem tertekan atau ditarik. Karena itu, bersama rekannya Jesse Thomas, dia menciptakan sebuah lampu rem yang akan bekerja saat motor mulai melambat, bagaimana pun cara perlambatannya. Lampu itu diberi nama Vololights.

Lampu itu terintegrasi sebagai frame plat nomer. Di frame itu terdapat delam lampu LED, sebuah microprocessor dan 3-axis accelerometer. Setelah dikalibrasi oleh pengguna saat pemasangan awal, Vololights akan mendeteksi perlambatan gerak apapun penyebabnya, entah karena downshifting, engine braking atau sedikit sentuhan tuas rem.

Jika pengereman terjadi di situasi normal, dua baris lampu LED Vololights akan menyala bergantian (berkedip) dengan durasi dua kedip per detik. Itu mendakan kepada pengendara di belakangnya  bahwa kendaraan tersebut memperlambat lajunya.

Jika kendaraan melakukan pengereman mendadak, maka lampu akan menyala berkedip lebih cepat, lima kedip per detik. Dengan demikian, pengendara yang ada di belakangnya bisa mengetahui kalau kendaraan di depannya melakukan pengereman mendadak.

Saat ini, lampu tersebut hanya beredari di kawasan Amerika.
